Fund-raising for Daycare at the Glebe

Saturday 22nd April 2017 – 7:30 pm

We are delighted that Crich favourite Lesley Smith is returning with her new show, Katherine Swynford, to raise funds for Daycare at The Glebe.

Lesley Smith dressed as Katherine SwynfordWe will travel back in time to the fourteenth century when there really were knights in shining armour and flags flying across this medieval green and pleasant land of England. We will discover the wonders of the period in this powerful performance by renowned historian and performer Lesley Smith.

Katherine, sister-in-law to the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, was renowned for her great beauty, and was regarded by some of her contemporaries as intriguing, and even dangerous!

John of Gaunt, Shakespeare’s “time honoured Lancaster”, was the fourth son of King Edward III, and was considered to be one of the most powerful princes of the fourteenth century, virtually ruling England on the accession of Richard II at the age of 10.

The story of Katherine and John is of one of the greatest love affairs recorded in English history.

Lesley speaks as if in the year 1399, a year of great upheaval, when Katherine would have been about 50, and 4 years before her death. She appears as Katherine, Duchess of Lancaster, in a spectacular costume of the period.
Lesley Smith is Curator of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire and is an English Reformationist Medical Historian. Lesley has appeared in over 130 television programmes in the last 7 years going out to 47 countries, and she regularly gives national radio interviews across the globe, including Radio South Africa and Australian national radio.

Lesley’s performances cover many of the most powerful women in British history – from Boudicca, through Nell Gwynne – to Margaret Thatcher!
