The Great Wall of China

Picture of the Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is famed for its sheer size - the ancient and magnificent fortification is one of the greatest wonders of the world. It has an average height of 33 feet and a width of 16 feet. Just like a gigantic dragon, it snakes up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaux.

With its several branches it runs about 4,500 miles (7,300 km) from east to west through northern China. From Shanhaiguan Pass to Jiayuguan Pass, the Wall winds across ridges and deserts via Beijing and Inner Mongolia finally ending in Gansu.

With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the sections of the Great Wall are now in ruins or even entirely disappeared. The Wall we see today is mostly from the Ming dynasty.

It is untrue that the Great Wall is the only man-made structure visible from outer space.
