Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday did not begin as a celebration of motherhood, but during the 16th century people returned to their mother church for a service on the fourth Sunday of Lent it was often the only time that whole families could get together. Traditionally it was a day when children, especially daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mothers and families.

Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers and home-made cards to their mothers.
