Award for St Mary’s Church

In September St Mary’s Church was presented with the ‘Best Project’ Award in the Derby Diocese for its re-ordering at the back of the church. The presentation was made on behalf of Bishop Alistair by the Archdeacon of Derby, the Venerable Doctor Christopher Cunliffe.

St Mary’s is a Grade 1 listed building, the only one in Crich and is often praised for its beauty and sense of being a serene and sacred space. Any changes have to go through all sorts of approvals and must be carried out sensitively. The church now has a disabled toilet, new kitchen, meeting room, bell ringing room and social space. The work was project managed by David Howard who did much of the work himself and received the award on behalf of the church.

St Mary’s is one of the few churches that is open every day, from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm. Anyone is invited to go in and view the changes and perhaps pause a while, admire the building, enjoy the tranquillity and maybe use that age-old sense of sacredness and history to reflect awhile. You might even utter a prayer – only God will hear you!
