Are you one of the 87 million people who have had their personal data ‘harvested’ from Facebook and used, without your knowledge or consent, to build up profiles of your political views and general interests for use by anonymous third parties? Will you ever know? Will you ever be told? Some of our Facebook secrets, perhaps, have come into the possession of some faceless organisation. And what will they do with them?

Well that has set you lying awake at night wondering who knows what about us and what they might be intending to do with what they know. So while Mark Zuckerberg is presently in damage-limitation mode reassuring Facebook users that your secrets really are safe with him, we might stop and pause a moment to think about the kinds of secrets we have.

Some secrets are fine. Planning a surprise party for someone or a special treat which you are keeping a secret from them. Others are not so fine. Like the guilty secrets we have. They are ‘harvested’ and get cached away in our conscience where they live on, causing us bad feelings, nightmares, and a host of ills. Neither is it some anonymous third party who has access to this cache of secrets. It is God. He knows our inward thoughts, our inward intentions, who we are and what we do when no-one else is around.

Whatever Mr Zuckerberg is offering to do to ‘caretake’ our Facebook secrets is nothing, however, compared to what God promises to do with our guilty secrets, our list of offences against Him, and against each other. This is what He promises, as reported by the Psalmist,

"For as the heavens are high above the earth,

So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;

As far as the east is from the west,

So far has He removed our transgressions from us."

All manner of things – our evil thoughts, our wrong deeds, our false motives, our devious words – God promises to remove them totally and utterly from His presence. In effect He promises to delete them from our record and put such a distance between Himself and them, that it is like the distance between opposite points of the compass.

This is great mercy. It is brought to pass through His Son dying on the cross for our guilty secrets, our sins, which stand between us and our Maker and Judge. His death is the full payment for what our thoughts, words and deeds deserve. No more payment is required. By trusting in His Son, all our guilty secrets are taken away forever and a day. Our secrets are safe with Him because they will be remembered no more, nor acted upon to our detriment.

I am able to sleep peacefully at night knowing this. Are you?
