prepraring to toast snow marshmellowsThis past term we have enjoyed all the wintery weather had to offer and didn’t let it stop us getting out and about. At Crich Pre-School we know how important it is to support the development of healthy and active lifestyles by offering children opportunities for physical activity, freedom and movement, and promoting a sense of well-being. Very young children learn predominately through their sensory and physical experiences which promote brain development. Learning outside gives our children an appreciation of nature and the environment, a chance to be active and healthy and develop their physical capabilities and getting outside around the village with the children is the perfect way to do this.

some of the pupils on their shopping tripWe’ve wrapped up warm to explore the snow and ice in our outdoor play area and made a pretend fire in one of the fields surrounding the village to toast “snow marshmallows”. We also made the most of the changeable weather to embark on a “Bear Hunt” around the village during World Book Week. Another exciting adventure was exploring reflections in a wood pile with mirrors and hunting for bugs with magnifying glasses in the park. We have visited the Junior School’s nature garden, St Mary’s Church, the new play area and taken the children to the shop to choose and purchase snacks.

Each time we have been out the children have worn their high visibility jackets and have walked holding onto our safety rope, they have listened and followed instruction very well, especially regarding road safety. Prompted by their trips, the children decided they wanted to “paint our village”, which resulted in a great creative project that they were all able to work on together. We plan to continue our trips with further visits to the park, a walk across the fields and a visit to the Wesleyan Chapel and look forward to the new experiences the spring and summer offer the children to learn and explore.

some of the children painting pots for Mother's Day gift bagsOur fundraising activities have continued this term, with the first of our cake stalls outside the butchers being held just before Mother’s Day and an Easter Raffle, both of which were very successful. The children painted pots for the plants in our Mother’s Day gift bags and we were very grateful for the kind donations of wonderful cakes from parents, grandparents and friends for the stall. Special thanks to Mrs Mottershead for baking so very much for us; her scones freshly baked on the morning went down especially well! Thanks also to volunteers who gave their time to run the stall for the morning as well as those of you who came along to purchase some tasty treats. We raised over £200.

The Easter raffle raised £118 and we were very grateful for the kind donations from local businesses, including Jeera, Crich Tramway Village, Matlock Farm Park, Scotland nurseries, White Post Farm, Flowers by Marcus in Alfreton, as well as Derby County FC and individual donations from parents and supporters. All money raised will, as always, be reinvested to enhance the experiences of our children. Thanks to all who bought tickets.

Our next fundraisers will be a Cake Stall and raffle on 16th June, the day before Father’s Day. There are some fantastic prizes that dads will love on offer, including Paintballing, Escape Rooms tickets, £20 cash donated by Digicharge and much more. We’ll also have a stall at the fete in July, as always, which we’re really looking forward to. As well as supporting our events, you can also support Crich Pre-School every time you shop online without it costing you a penny.

Please visit to register and start raising funds. We hope you will continue to support us in all our fundraising.

During the summer term, our older children are beginning to prepare to leave us and move on to the next stage in their education at Infants School. We are very fortunate to have such strong ties to Crich Infants School, and Pre-School children who will be attending the school from September will be enjoying sessions at the school on Thursdays throughout the summer term. Parents of previous Pre- School children, who are now at the Infants School, tell us this is an invaluable experience and really makes a difference in the transition for our youngsters. We also work hard to share information and establish links with other settings so that those moving on elsewhere are also fully supported in this next step in their learning journey.

We are already beginning to plan for the next year ourselves and are currently allocating places for children to attend from September 2018. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in finding out more about our setting we would encourage you to look at our website ( and get in touch to arrange a visit. Children can attend from age 2 and we accept registration from birth. As more houses are built in the village our numbers are increasing, so the earlier your child is registered the better able we are to meet your childcare needs. Registration forms are available to download from our website or to collect from The Glebe.

Finally, the Trustees would like to thank all staff for their hard work and parents for their continued support over the past term.
